Spanish olive are one of the best allies of the environment though their sequestration of carbon along the 2.5 million hectares of cultivated trees in the whole country. This is one of the main conclusions of a study carried out by the “Arable Crops” team of the Agrifood Campus of International Excellence ceiA3 at the University of Córdoba, published in the latest issue of Rural Life.
In this report, researchers Luis López Bellido, Pedro J. Lopez-Bellido and Purification Garrido Fernández indicate that olive trees contribute substantially to mitigate global emissions. Specifically, the annual rate of sequestration was estimated to be 6 percent of the yearly estimated total C02 emissions and 56 percent of CO2 emissions coming from agriculture only. Based on this evidence, authors demand that 'food industry is no longer consider at the same level as other industries, such as cement factories or airlines, which use raw material that do not sequester any carbon”.
